DISC, MEYERS BRIGGS and TRUE COLOURS are all personality profile assessments. If you have worked in business for any length of time, you have more than likely done at least one, if not all of these assessments. They are all slightly different, yet similar in that you answer the questions on the ‘questionnaire’ and it gives you feedback based on what your natural temperament, behavioural characteristics, and preferences are.
DISC has four personality types; DOMINANCE, INFLUENCE, STEADINESS, and COMPLIANCE.
MEYERS BRIGGS is based on sixteen combinations of; The INSPECTOR, THE COUNSELOR, THE MASTERMIND, THE GIVER, THE PROVIDER, THE IDEALIST, THE SUPERVISOR, and THE VISIONARY.
TRUE COLOURS ® has four; ORANGE, BLUE, GOLD & GREEN.
What you probably didn’t know is that modern-day psychology resulted from the studying of people’s predispositions and temperament as far back as 370BC with Hypocrites, and furthered in 1921 when Carl Jung identified four personality types. In 1943, Kathryn Briggs and her daughter Isabel Myers, developed the Myers Briggs Questionnaire based on their curiosity of the interaction between husband and wife. In 1967 David Keirsey focused his understanding on families and organizations, emphasizing that personality differences exist, and that we should stop trying to change people to be copies of ourselves.
Man has always studied man in efforts to better understand their psychological differences in personalities, yet in 1978 Don Lawry took it one step further. By refining the Myers Briggs studies, and combining it with Keirsey’s work, he created TRUE COLOURS ® which is my favourite assessment. Why?? … not only does it help people identify their own strengths, but it helps people identify the personality types and traits in others, taking the leap to helping them to better relate and interact with each other. It is one thing to understand yourself, it is much greater to identify and understand others, to improve your interaction, communication, trust, empathy and understanding of others. Lowry has made it fun, easy to learn, and easy to retain. It becomes a ‘language’ at home or in the office while creating significant benefits in our relations the people around us.
